Drug Exposure

We had a couple members get exposed to a substance believed to be fentanyl yesterday. The officers were given Narcan, and rushed to the hospital. I am happy to report that they are home and doing well by all accounts. Be very aware of any possible substances you may come into contact with during your duties. We have had multiple incidents where officers who were being careful, still ingested a substance that caused immediate medical issues. Take all precautions and use protective equipment at every step of the way. Be safe and take care of each other.

It would be nice to have training on, what these substances looks like, we should know what all substances look like. Especially since the way it gets sent in changes. We should have training on key words that inmates use for these substances. The odd thing about this department is these type of things are kept secret. The reason for this is to help keep all COs safer lack of knowledge can be life or death. Training on narcan would be nice every year!! Having it available for us to use is only half the problem. As we are getting more and more staff we need to start training more.

Yes it is up to the department to provide us with NARCAN and training on how to use it, but we all know how that goes. If you want to be prepared while we wait (like always) for training and resources, protect yourselves and your fellow officers. I do not depend on the department to provide me something that could save my life. NARCAN is FDA-approved for over-the-counter sales and available at stores like Walgreens.

Lunk, as you stated be careful but this occurred during count time as he was near a cell door. Warden Oliver the day before went to this exact unit to speak with the offender population about issues inside this unit, and ended up being transported to a nearby hospital from an apparent seizure.

During searches wear some PPE. This was not a joke. These officers waited over 40 minutes for an ambulance transport. I would hope we would just take someone next time in their POV, or via state van.

Crazy part about all of this is not all of us carry narcan on us. Medical was asked if we could have some and they stated no they can't just…

So did Warden Oliver get transported to a nearby hospital, and if so any word on how he is doing?
