I just spoke with DDO Williams about Radios, AR 362, and 12's in the south.
Radios- SDCC has reached out to the vendor about a service call and Portillo is including the union reps in the communications. HDSP, Bean is in court, so he is reaching out for the ASO, to get an update on timeframe. He also is having FMWCC schedule a radio service call.
AR 362 Weapons Qualification, DDO WIlliams fully agrees with having the officers train on state time, with a certified range master for remedial training. He will update the language in that AR and submit it to me for review. Officers will still likely have to purchase their own rounds as there is no built in funding yet, for practice rounds. He does fully support trying to get practice rounds in the budget moving forward.
12's in the south- I explained the value of our schedule and the need for a 12 hour schedule to be all in(not half and half) to maintain efficiency. DDO Williams has a bad taste from the times that the 12's did not work out previously. He stated that if the wardens are supportive of twelves, he will discuss it with them moving forward. As of today, no wardens have contacted him about implementing 12's in the south. The increase in morale and reduction of sick leave at NNCC since 12's were implemented, have been very significant. I pointed this out to Williams, without any disagreement. I also presented the idea of doing different schedules at different facilities. So for example 12's at HDSP and 8's at SDCC. Then allowing transfers for those who wish to work a specific shift, between facilities. He said he will bring this up at his wardens meeting Tuesday.
Why is it that we are hearing from administration at NNCC that twelves are going away and sick leave is higher? There is definitely a bad vibe going around the yard.
I have a model for 12s that looks like it will work. I pitched it to Warden Najera even she was our Warden. She was all about it but we didn't have the staff level. I could share it with you if you want so we have a jumping off point. As far as I can see, it accounts for everything.
Make all the Unit posts 12 hour shifts, and non-unit posts 8 hour shifts.
