If you didn’t have an idea of what was coming before, let me confirm to you that Director Daniels and Chief Leathers are chomping at the bit to fire people who are not vaccinated as soon as they get the go ahead. This is absolute lunacy. While I support everyone‘s choice to be vaccinated or unvaccinated, this mandate doesn’t make any sense. Think about it, 60% of the entire department is NOT vaccinated. We can’t staff our prisons now as it is, how in the world are they going to staff the prisons with 40% of the staff they have right now? The administration including the Director and Leathers have made disparaging remarks about those who choose not to be vaccinated. This bully mentality to shame people and coerce people into something they do not want is downright vile. I do want all members to make their own informed decisions based on what is best for them. So if you’re already covered under our legal defense benefit, you will have a fighting chance if you choose not to take the shot. I am here to tell you that I don’t have an answer for how this will play out on appeal, but you will have an attorney to fight for you all the way down the line. If you know officers that plan on refusing the shot, make sure to tell them it might be a good idea to join FOP so that they can at least have a lawyer to fight their case. Remember, if they aren’t a member when they refuse the mandate, they will not be covered. Be safe and take care of each other.
